West Florida Hospital Announces All Private Rooms

When it comes to your privacy, you would not think of sharing your bedroom or even a hotel room with a stranger.  So why would you share your hospital room at a time when you need peace, rest and privacy more than ever?

West Florida Hospital is proud to announce that they are the only hospital in Northwest Florida to offer all private rooms at no additional charge.  Though shared hospital rooms are the norm at most hospitals nationwide, West Florida Hospital can now guarantee that you won’t have to share a room with anyone else.  As of January 19, West Florida Hospital is the only hospital in the area to offer all private inpatient rooms.

“As part of our goal to provide high quality care to our community, we are extremely pleased to offer all private room accommodations,” said Dennis A. Taylor, president and CEO of West Florida Healthcare.

Numerous studies have found that patients who use hospitals offering all private rooms have several advantages over patients in hospitals that utilize semi-private rooms—it reduces their chance for infection, lowers stress levels, and allows them to get the rest they need to recover quicker.”

“The bottom line is, when you or a loved one needs to be in the hospital, you now have a choice. When you select West Florida Hospital for your medical care, you can recover from your illness or injury in the privacy of your own room,” said Carol Saxton, Chief Nursing Officer and Senior Vice President for Patient Care Services at West Florida Hospital.

By converting to all private rooms, West Florida Hospital is following a progressive trend in healthcare.  In 2006, the American Institute of Architects Guidelines for Design and Construction of Healthcare Facilities as well as Florida Building Codes was changed to require that all new hospitals be built to provide all private rooms.

“Private rooms cut down on infection rates and they allow us to adhere to the patient privacy guidelines set forth by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA),” continued Saxton.  “These guidelines are practically impossible to enforce in shared rooms, where roommates are privy to conversations of personal nature.”

West Florida Hospital, which recently completed a $100 million renovation, has provided comprehensive healthcare services to northwest Florida and south Alabama residents since 1975. West Florida Healthcare has also partnered with Covenant Hospice to build the area’s only inpatient hospice unit, a 16-bed unit dedicated to end of life care. The hospital offers major services in cardiology/cardiovascular surgery, general surgery, oncology, neurology/neurosurgery, orthopedics, behavioral health, obstetrics, rehabilitative medicine and many other medical specialties.
